Working within her new color pallet, Susan continues to play with the circular form of the spindle whorl. In New Beginnings, elongated wedge forms contribute to the elegant motion of the playful figures. Reversed, repeated images and a simple juxtaposition of color create a dynamic tension within the thin black circle, causing the figural forms to alternately jump out at the viewer and recede back into the image.
(This design was originally commissioned in 1987 by the Northwest Tissue Center in Seattle, WA for their logo. In 1989, Susan created a limited edition print of the image.)
