Learn about the Philippine collections during Filipino American History Month!
“Barangay” (baa-raang-gai) is a Tagalog term to refer to a local administrative unit, village, or neighborhood in the Philippines. As a term describing the most localized level of community, it signifies close relationships and building bridges with one another.
We invite you to help build a barangay at the Burke Museum, as we reflect upon the 4,200 cultural collections and archival materials from the Philippines. Building the Barangay will highlight how Philippine diaspora and Filipino/a/x American community members have reflected upon collections and made space at the museum and within their own community.
Featuring performances by Sayaw; reflections by Nixon Sarol of BIBAK PNW, Cynthia Mejia-Giudici, and Velma Veloria; and poetry from Troy Osaki.
Co-organized with Dr. Rick Bonus, Department Chair of American Ethnic Studies and the Burke Museum Heritage: Arts & Cultures department.
