PERMISSION TO COLLECT

Dear Professor Pietsch:

On behalf of the Presidium of Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences I hereby authorise you and the team of international scientists made up of Americans, Japanese, and Russians, to collect and remove plant and animal specimens from the Kuril Islands. This permit is valid for expeditions in 1994 to 1997, and is issued subject to a number of provisions as follows:

  1. A full list of all specimens removed, with detailed informations about taxonomical names, dates, precise localities of collecting, and other descriptions, must be submitted to Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences by way of the Deputy Chairman.

  2. Copies of any report, journal publications, and books coming from specimens collected must be submitted to Far East Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences by way of the Deputy Chairman.

  3. Collected specimens of plants and animals must be, in all instances, shared equitably between Russian, American, and Japanese scientists, with each nation getting about one third of total collections; holotype specimens may be shared also; it is possible that all frozen tissues can be sent to Burke Museum at the University of Washington.

  4. A copy of this letter of permission to collect must be carried at all times when collecting on the Kuril Islands and must be displayed to authorities if requested.

I again wish to express our big interest in realisation of the joint Russian-American-Japanese Project on Kuril Islands biodiversity. We will try to do our best to make it successful.
