The Kuril Archipelago is an island chain of volcanic origin, part of the Pacific Rim of Fire. The islands are were formed geologically recently and, seismic and volcanic activity are still shaping the terrain.

The nature of the archipelago's origin is manifest in the abundance of volcanic cones, and the ruggedness of the topology.
