The Makah people live today in Neah Bay, Washington, on the extreme northwestern tip of the state. They speak a Wakashan language that is related to the language of the Nuu-chah-nulth people on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Makah and Nuu-chah-nulth people are famous for their whaling culture as well as their fine basketry. Their baskets are often decorated with whaling canoes, whalers hurling harpoons, and whales. Fine geometric patterns and sea birds are also favorite designs.
