Another print derived from a legend, Captive Maiden, refers to a story of a young woman who is carried off by an owl. Swirling images of the owl with its wings extended surround the young woman who is seated in the center of the print. Susan's balance of positive and negative space is accentuated by her use of light and dark colors. Again the elements of experimentation, in color and subject, are combined with a recognizably Coast Salish formal vocabulary. The shape of the composition references the spindle whorl and, again, evokes a spinning motion through the repetition of pattern.
