The images of the comb and mat creaser in this print are derived from two historic objects. The print is done on hand-made, cotton fiber paper, mixed with bits of silver glitter. It is an indication of the thorough examination of historic Coast Salish objects Susan Point has undertaken in her career. It was from objects such as these that Point was able to derive much of her early imagery, and she relied upon them to familiarize herself with the traditional Coast Salish design vocabulary.

mat creaser
comb The comb and mat creaser shown here, from the Burke Museum's collection, are not the ones Point drew upon for her print. Rather they are examples of these types of objects that allow one to glimpse the style of carving that was being created among the Coast Salish during the 19th century.
